Madison County Sheriff's Office

The Madison County Sheriff's Office was formed in 1828, and the first Sheriff was James Barefield. Since that time 38 men and women have served as Sheriff with Sheriff M. E. "Toby" Trowbridge assuming the office in 2000. From the time the Sheriff's Office was established, the offices of the department were generally housed in the courthouse and a jailer was based in the jail. When the 1968 jail was built, offices were located in both the courthouse and jail.

On April 1, 1991, a new 250 bed jail and Sheriff's Office was opened on U.S. Highway 51 in the southern part of Canton. At that time all operations of the department were consolidated into one building.

In March 2001 ground was broken for new office space for the Sheriff's Office at the site of the old 1968 jail. This is next door to the current Sheriff's Office and jail.
